As you can see from the image above, I have been working out for quite some time. I posted a bit of information on Instagram as to how I began this journey, but I figure why not post the entire story here? I hope you’ve got some spare time. Here we go:

Last year of June 2016, I weighed about 180+ pounds without even knowing… the heaviest I’ve ever been. The lightest I’ve ever been is 160-161 lbs around age 15. From there, my weight usually stayed around 173 lbs. I have a really big sweet tooth, so you can imagine the kind of snacks I ate at home and at grandma’s (who was literally right around the corner from our old house). Cookies, chips, ice cream, pop, cakes, etc.. you name it, I probably ate it (unless it had peanut butter or nuts). I wasn’t an inactive kid/teen, but I wasn’t super active either – I was right in between.

Around the ages of 16-20, I “started”, or at least tried to, working out. I would look at my body in the mirror and say, “This is it! I’m going to change!”. I would be consistent for a week or two, then out of the blue I would say, “I love my body the way it is.” and I would basically stop. This was during the time the ‘body positive’ movement starting becoming popular. I was letting this movement confuse me, and I would lean towards wanting to live a healthier lifestyle, or I would lean towards “loving” my body and not do anything at all. OR, I would have the mindset of eating what I want and “just work it off”. I would workout 3x a week and still eat a bunch of junk. On top of that, I was barely pushing myself to work hard and really train my body; believe it or not, I chose 3x a week because I didn’t want to workout everyday. Either way, I wasn’t sure of what I wanted and this caused me to be wishy-washy. Then came sweet ol’ June 2016.. the month to change my life forever. Why? I’m glad you asked!

June is the month my older cousin was born in. Last year she decided to have a birthday party at the beach, and I was actually excited to go. I was into (well, I still am) photography and my camera was still a bit new. I was looking forward to taking pics of the beach and my family. 1-2 days before the birthday bash, I set out with my older brother to find a swimsuit or something of the like. We checked quite a few stores, and I came out empty handed every single time. Not just because I didn’t like what they had to offer, but because NOTHING fit!!! I settled for a pair of shorts and a t-shirt, but I was still unhappy and I took them back the next day. I held back tears from my brother, but on the inside I was totally heartbroken. “Am I really overweight, or was it just the clothes?” I wondered. We finally went home, and honestly, I felt like crap. What happened next only made matters worse.

While sulking in my room, my mom came in and we talked for a bit. I told her what happened, and she grabbed me by the arm and drug me into her bathroom. She told me to step on the scale, and I did. 182 lbs. Wonderful! 🙂 (sarcasm). She said, “Try again tomorrow. You’ve been eating and drinking, and that has an affect on you throughout the day.” So I stepped off the scale with a bit of hope after hearing those words. I messaged my friend and also told her what happened, and she said, “My motto is if you don’t like something, change it.” And that’s what I decided to do. I went on a hunt for a fitness program, and I came across Jamie Eason’s on bodybuilding.com. I decided to do the program, and though I was still bumming, I made the choice to officially change my life. The next morning I got on the scale again, and the numbers still read 182 lbs.

At this point, I was feeling anxious, excited, sad, and more. You may ask what made me get serious and that, to me, is where the fun begins. I had to sit myself down and really think about what I wanted for my body, and why. I took a piece of paper and as silly as this may sound, I wrote myself a contract. Here’s what it says,

“Fitness is not my goal, it’s MY lifestyle! This will not be easy by any stretch of the imagination. This is my life I’m fighting for – God’s temple. I will cry. I will sweat. I will hurt. It will all be worth it. I will study to show myself approved. I will change my mindset, and my body shall follow. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Signature: Kyla D. Broome.

Yup. I did that, and it helped. To this day, I still love working out! The key is to change your mindset and envision your future self- CONSTANTLY. When you think, “I don’t want to do this.” you have to quickly backfire with, “Yes I do! I LOVE working out! I LOVE fitness, and I LOVE eating right!” Soon you’ll find yourself enjoying this journey, and actually wanting to continue. Who knows where I could be right now if it weren’t for my cousin having that party. If shopping hadn’t made me realize that I needed to change, I could be much worse, and the journey could be much harder.

I still have a ways to go myself, and more body goals to accomplish, but I am sharing this in hopes that someone looking for a sign or motivation will read this and make the decision to change their life. You have the choice to embrace the difficulties that come along, or you can resent them and make it harder. This is you changing your life, and it’s all up to you.

TIPS AND ADVICE:

    As you begin this journey, know that it may be hard in the beginning. You will have times where you love it and see changes, and you will have times where you think you’re doing everything wrong and you haven’t changed a bit. It took me a few months to figure out what works for me, and even though some programs were good, I end up making my own routine and it works for me. So, if you have trouble finding a program, try looking at the tons of workouts out there, and make up your own program!

DO NOT BE HARD ON YOURSELF!!!! I’ve got a lot of nerve telling you this when I need to tell myself. haha!! But seriously. Work hard and push yourself, but also learn to take it one day at a time. I constantly have to remind myself that someone else’s journey isn’t mine, and our bodies are different. We have different goals to accomplish as well. Some people have started way before me, so of course they are further in progress than I am, but I will get there. It all takes time! This whole journey will not be accomplished in a few short years, but rather throughout your LIFE. This journey is for your life, not just for next Summer.

Do. Not. Be. Afraid. To. EAT. And yes, I still struggle with this from time to time, but I’m slowly starting to see food as “gains” (what my brother and cousin calls them. They’re bodybuilders). I’m not saying to go overboard and eat whatever, but don’t be afraid to have some pizza every now and then with your family or friends. Eat as clean as you can throughout the week, and treat yourself on the weekends. Don’t put yourself in a food prison. Self-control is key.

DO NOT DIET!!! Surprise, surprise! YOU DON’T HAVE TO DIET!! 😀 Really. When I hear diet, I hear “CUT. CUT. CUT.” In fact, all you have to do is change what you eat. You can still eat delicious foods, but just be sure they are healthier.

DO NOT (CONSTANTLY) RELY ON THE SCALE! If I’m being honest, I battle with the scale often. I’ve seen a lot of Instagram posts saying that it can’t be trusted, and that’s true to a degree. I’m not saying to totally ditch it, but don’t totally rely on it either. Our bodies change everyday, and weight fluctuates. If the numbers go up, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve gained fat. It could be that you’ve gained muscle, or you have water weight. If it goes down, it doesn’t mean you’ve lost weight either. It could be losing muscle or, again, water weight (or fat). My point is to take pictures throughout your journey. Grant it, the before pictures may not be fun to take, but as you go on it becomes exciting as you begin to see changes.

Before you start your personal journey, ask yourself these important questions:

  1. Why do I want to be fit and healthy?
  2. Am I willing to make these changes even when hard, or I don’t feel like it?
